"As nonprofit organizations, our job is to show our donors their (philanthropic) vocation."
Paul G. Schervish, Director of the Center for Wealth and Philanthropy, Boston College
Planning is what we do first for every organization, and it is worth every moment invested. Quantifying growth in contributed income is an essential, even vital component of any nonprofit strategic planning process. JWA spends much time working with clients to help them do just this.
And yet the essence of fundraising is in the unquantifiable “magic” that occurs when an organization coalesces around the heart and soul of its Donor -> Nonprofit -> Recipient relationship.
As Paul G. Schervish, Director of the Center for Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College puts it, “As fundraisers, our job is to show our donors their vocation.”
When we work this “magic” unanticipated, and often unprecedented giving begins to occur. But as any casual student of Harry Potter knows, magic requires studied careful reasoned effort.
Donors believe in an organization because they find it to be sound, energetic, productive, and able to fill an essential need. Once they believe in your organization, they are ready to look into their own hearts and provide you with their time, talent and treasure. This only happens with a clear and reasoned plan in place. We at JWA have found that the backbone of that plan is a simple mantra (or spell if you will).

Kindness
If we are truly kind to those who want to support us – by listening to them – by answering their questions – by allowing their involvement at the level that they are able to participate – by helping them to become a healthy part of your organization….
Courage
If we are courageous in – taking the time to develop strong strategies and plans – clearly defining our programs and their value quantitatively and qualitatively – expecting the very best from our staff and board – documenting accountability….
Gratitude
If we graciously accept those gifts of time, talent and treasure that our supporters choose to give – promptly acknowledging gifts – regularly sending thank you notes – calling to just say hi and thank you – helping our donors to know what good things are happening as a result of their support…
Then abundance will happen.
